Who Are the Jesuits?

The Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, is a global Catholic religious order founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius of Loyola. The Jesuits are renowned for their contributions to education, social justice, intellectual leadership, spiritual guidance, and humanitarian service across the world. He was the first Jesuit to come to India. Jesuit educational institutions can be found in almost every country around the world. The Jesuits educate over one million and fifty thousand students in over 450 colleges and 150 colleges. In India, the Jesuits run 4 universities and over 50 colleges. They have a rich heritage and strong reputation for providing quality all- round education to their students. St. Xavier's College Umoid is affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. It is a co-educational institution and treats all its students equally, irrespective of gender, tribe, creed or community. As a "Minority institution," the college enjoys certain privileges. Even though the college's primarily responsibility is to the students from the Catholic community, it also cares for students from other faiths to the extent possible.
