St Xavier's College Umoid is a Catholic-Jesuit institution run by the members of the Society of Jesus, commonly known as Jesuits. In 1540, the Jesuits were founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. He was a Basque nobleman who got injured in battle in 1521. During his convalescence he underwent an inner transformation and decided to dedicate his life to the service of God. St. Francis Xavier was a founding member of the Jesuits and one of the original companions of St. Ignatius. He was the first Jesuit to come to India. Jesuit educational institutions can be found in almost every country around the world. The Jesuits educate over one million and fifty thousand students in over 450 colleges and 150 colleges. In India, the Jesuits run 4 universities and over 50 colleges. They have a rich heritage and strong reputation for providing quality all-round education to their students. St. Xavier's College Umoid is affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. It is a co-educational institution and treats all its students equally, irrespective of gender, tribe, creed or community. As a "Minority institution," the college enjoys certain privileges. Even though the college's primarily responsibility is to the students from the Catholic community, it also cares for students from other faiths to the extent possible.
